Four-day retreat (8 a.m. June 22- 4 p.m. June 25) at Todd Hall Retreat Center, Columbia, IL.

Designed for district and school leaders, participants examine their own role in the systems of oppression based on race and class. This includes

  • dominant group privilege, the advantages that persons in the dominant social groups experience in this society by virtue of their skin color or class
  • internalized oppression, the destructive patterns of feelings and behaviors experienced by victims of oppression

Focus is on indepth, challenging exercises using fishbowl and racial caucus formats. Participants also demonstrate an understanding of three fundamental anti-oppression constructs: the table of oppression, the cycle of oppression and the fabric of oppression.

Mini-lectures frame these concepts reinforced by experiential exercises to deepen learning. A mixed race team leads the retreat.

Two one-day followup sessions build on participants' personal social justice journey and address individual and institutional strategies and tactics for eliminating the achievement gap.

Coaching and support - EEC will provide districts participating in BOTH the Leadership and Racism Institute
and the Leadership and Racism Program with followup coaching and support in addressing institutional racism.

Sessions expand and deepen the Program retreat with more focus on implications for school strategies and actions and tools for addressing institutional racism.

Fee: $2,800 per person. Teams of three or more persons save $100/person.
